Workplace Literacy - Essay Example In these regards, there is the recognition that a healthy lifestyle – including nutrition – contributes to scholastic and life success. As the university has an obligation to help students it is necessary for them to consider healthy food options. One of the prominent health concerns is the potential for type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes generally occurs as a direct result of obesity; this obesity correspondingly occurs because of inactivity and unhealthy nutrition. The potential of type 2 diabetes is an even greater concern as it can potentially cause hypertension, kidney failure, heart disease, nerve damage, and even blindness or stroke ("Health affects of," 2010). In addition to type 2 diabetes, unhealthy diets have also been specifically linked to asthma and liver disease. In terms of asthma, research has demonstrated that people with obesity are 92% more likely to experience asthma ("Health affects of," 2010). This is a serious concern, as asthma is accompanied by wheezing and a variety of respiratory problems. Additionally, liver disease occurs as fat builds in the liver cells. This can be accompanied by liver failure and cirrhosis ("Health affects of," 2010). While there are a variety of specific health problems related to eating an unhealthy diet, there is also the recognition that there are a variety of health concerns that are indirectly linked to dietary choice. Perhaps the most serious of these concerns is stroke; high blood pressure that occurs as a result of an unhealthy diet contributes to stroke. Another indirect health concern is cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease occurs partly through the build up of plaque and fat in the arteries and can have serious health implications.
